Educating nursing staff regarding infection control practices and assessing its impact on the incidence of hospital-acquired infections. Journal of Education and Health Promotion ,
In this experimental study, the researchers evaluated the impact of a one-time educational module on nurses’ infection control-related knowledge, attitudes, and practices (KAP) and incidence of hospital-acquired infections (HAIs). The participants of this study were 105 nurses who provided care to adult and pediatric inpatients, and the primary outcome measures were rates of catheter-associated urinary tract infection (CAUTI) and intravenous (IV) line-related infections. They found that post-training scores for knowledge and attitude significantly improved, but there was no significant difference in the reduction of the HAIs rate. The authors concluded that “longer training periods and reinforcement in the form of reminders and motivation can be an important strategy for a sustained impact.” This study highlights one of the issues with one-time educational interventions.
